260MC Reflection/Analysis. T2

260MC, was the longest yet interesting module, I have taken yet. Starting slow with a vague perception of film history,  I’ve learned that nothing in media those days, can be original, yet we draw from the past,  inspiration and we combine it with our vision, to create “our style”, witch basically means that we have left a footprint  in the media industry. This module was a true inspiration, and it made me think professionally.

Term two was all about future, and how we, as  a young generation, can change the world, and make it  better. I started term two stepping, outside my comfort zone, and thinking outside the box. We  were assign, to  invent,  a new technology, prototype, website, app, that somehow will change the way we see things. 57% of  the students, chose to create an app, that is  related to university, and  make a easier life to  media production students. This  says a lot about the youngest generation witch is  that technology became a part of society, and  people  uses their phones,app, everyday, at any hour of the day. Phonesarena.com, says that ” Face to face communication and voice calls are actually less and less popular, especially amongst the young crowd where each teenager receives around 88 text messages per day on average. Those are staggering numbers.”

Conform SocialCubix.com ” There are 6.8 billion, mobile subscriptions worldwide.”

In the first week, I though about creating an app, in order to, build a community, followed by my second idea, witch was  an experimental art gallery, and using it in order to get more people interested in the arts industry (click here to know more about it ). After the  verbal feedback I’ve got from my tutors, I’ve decided to finally go with something more futuristic, and I came up with  X100, a laser camera, witch  is able to film, and take photography  by  shooting a pulse of laser, and analysing the environment, and  it will be able to  use holograms to play it back to the audience. ( more details about X100).

The goods about  X100, are that is using a new technology that is not yet on the market , (3D HOLOGRAMS), is able to film with laser,  you have full control of the image( it changes your perspective,you can shift the living picture in any direction; left, right, up, down and all around), and it gives you and the  users, a whole new world, and a  camera that knows it all.

There  are some issues with this camera,  witch the  research that it needs to be done, before creating it, preparing the world in order to accept  a change, the price witch, in the releasing year will be  higher, and not many, will have, that amount of money, to spend on a new technology, and the biggest issue, is that the camera will  take a long time till the release, and from my  research, 2030, will be the year for X100, as  most of the technologies that, this camera  uses,   were already invented in 2009, 2010, 2012.

Term two, from 260MC, was  all about future, and all about changing the world. Is the most interesting module I have taken, yet  it made me realise, that, at this point of time, my ideas, are not involving  the meaning of ” changing  the world” as it should,  yet I think  the idea that I’m presenting is a bold move, and from those 200 hours,  I’ve learned  a lot about the history of media, technology, and how it influences, the way we live today.

Jacob Aron, says in his article for  newscientist.com that ” The virtual currency is about more than money – the real innovation is what people are doing with the technology it is based on.”

Future development plan for X100

X100, is a  new technology on market, witch will be available on market in 2030.  This means that this  technology is still in the researching area, and  in order to make it  available to the public, I’ll have to hire, a research, marketing, and technicians team. 

This  camera is a challenge, and   I will need a professional team behind me, to work with. In a short analyse, I discovered that, with the right amount of money, and a good team, we can manage to market it. 

I  also did a marketing/business plan, and  I believe that In our first year of operation, we believe we can capture 15 to 25% of the market, which translates into £100,000 – £130,000 in sales.We can earn £149,000 in our first year, rising to £175,000 and £191,000 in our second and third years, respectively. Our market strategy will be to advertise and capitalize on the services that our competitors do not offer.

We will be competing, with several companies, as Nikon,Cannon,Leica, The new technology camera that can see across corners… etc…

We have a competitive advantage, however, because our equipment is more aligned with the video production industry trends requiring digital technology, as opposed to analog devices.

Why X100 / Evaluation

X100, is a prototype, and a new technology, that will be on the market, in 10 to 15 years. This new camera, will bring  a new world to filmmakers, a new method to shoot, and create their films,in an interactive, and interesting way .

Why the world needs technology ?

Everytime I ask filmmakers about  the equipment that they use, they are always saying that they wish  that filming could become more easy, less equipment to carry, and in the same time more interesting. Lately I’ve  done research on 100 media students from Coventry University, and I found out that  they will be  really interested in buying  X100. One of them said ” X100, is a practical,yet innovative and revolutionary, new technology, that will  help filmmakers be more creative, and the audience to interact more with the film, story” , ” holograms are a nice touch to the camera, hopefully the design  will be practical” said another student.

After  this research,  I started taking this idea more serious, and  I want  my audience to visualise it, so I started thinking about design, and how  I can make my  idea work in the real world.(Click Here)

To answer why the world needs technology, I’m going, to start by saying, that, for many people, the internet, mobiles, social networking and other new technologies are shaping their daily lives.”There are 18.8 million home broadband connections in the UK, 50 % of adults in the UK have a social networking profile, children aged 12-15 are more likely to say they would miss their mobile phone or the internet than TV, nearly a third of 12 to 15 year olds in the UK use a smart phone to go online at home, there was a threefold increase in tablet use among young people between 2011 and 2012, teenage girls now send more than 30 text messages a day” ( source teachtoday.eu).

Most people think that technology is still changing the world, and it will, as I agree with this information. Technology is shaping the world, and  the future, it may look, exactly  like we imagine too, and we see in films.

A team from Microsoft, already started to  build a hologram world, that uses holograms that have weight, and  we can manipulate it, exactly as we like. ( see video )

Camera uses laser beams to take 3D images from 1km away

Today I found out, that the new technology, known as 3D, is being used for more then just  films, and photography. From Google’s Streetview cars now going to make drive-by 3D models, to instance helping military drones better see targets in combat operations. This new technology, could have a lot of different scientific applications, as Buller said “the system could be placed on airplanes and used to scan the vegetation in a forest, helping to determine the size and health of the plants. The team is also interested in making the camera work well underwater, which would allow people to scan the depth of oceans or lakes and determine their shape.”

“That’s the beauty of this system,” said physicist Gerald Buller of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, co-author of a paper on the system that appeared on 4 April in Optics Express. “Each laser pulse contains many photons, but we only need one photon to return for every 10 optical pulses.”

“The superconducting detector has the potential to really be phenomenal,” said engineer Mark Itzler of Princeton Lightwave Inc, who was not involved in the work. It would probably find a wide variety of uses, he said.

This new camera, can produce high-resolution 3D images of objects from 1 Km away.

How it works?

“The technology works by sending out a low-power infrared laser beam, which sweeps over an object or scene. Some light gets reflected back, though most is scattered in different directions. A detector measures how long it takes one particle of light, a photon, to return to the camera and is then able to calculate the distance from the system to the object. The technique can resolve millimetre-size bumps and changes in depth from hundreds of metres away.” said  ADAM MANN  for wired.co.uk

This technology is excellent news for  inventors and researchers, as  it’s a step forward for  new ideas, and science, and in the same time, helping the world, and not just filmmakers or photographers. This will be a good idea for my camera, even thought, I want to keep my idea as simple as it can get, and someday, get in touch with a researchers, and developers  team, to make it  a revolutionary  way to see the world around us.

The camera that can see around corners.

As I promised, In this post I’m going to  show and explain, how this technology helped my progress in the creation of my new camera  (x100).

“New technology could lead to devices that can spot people hidden from view or inspect components deep inside machines”

This is how .theguardian.com is presenting the new technology, but it’s actually more then that. This camera is a evolution from the  last technology I’ve been talking about( camera that can see though skin), it opens doors, for developers, and helping people like me, understand the technology, how it works, and  it helps me develop my idea, as it uses the same  laser  pulse, and the speed of light.

My X100,  technology   is a revolutionary camera, that is using the speed of light, and laser, to  analyse the environment, in deep, as the technology will see though skin, walls, glass, and will then  some of the pulse will be transported back to the camera, 100 to be exact.  Why 100? , because  we divided the human body,  in 100 points,so the camera will focus on those points, wile creating the image back.  

As the new technology, my camera  at heart of the technique is the ability to build up images from light waves that are scattered off surfaces like walls in almost every direction. 

You may ask what are the differences?

I can only explain that in a single word, ‘HOLOGRAPHY’ . X100 will be able to reflect a  3D hologram, when you watch your footage, or you can choose to  look at the LCD screen on the camera.

Most ultra-fast imaging technologies aim to mitigate the effects of scattered light, focusing instead on just the first photons to reach the sensor. The difference here, says Raskar, “is that we actually exploit the scattered light”. ” It can record images every 2 picoseconds, the time it takes light to travel just 0.6 mm. So it can record the distance travelled by each photon with sub-millimetre precision” 

This process will take several minutes, but in the futures researchers hope that, it will be reduced to 10 seconds says nature.com

X100, is a prototype, but a revolutionary way to see things differently, is based on two technologies that has been developed in 2012, and holograms which is already in the world in a 2D format and it uses a A4 scanner, extremetech.com says that,” The reason why you don’t see holograms everywhere is not because we don’t know how to make them, but because the technology required to do so is currently quite expensive.” 

The scanner used by the team  ( Japan’s Chiba University ) — a regular 4800 dpi A4 paper scanner, and it’s able to create images with a resolution of over two gigapixels.  This technology is called scannergram, and you can see how it works in the picture below.

So far, the team used the rig to create 0.43-gigapixel holograms of tiny insects — a flea and an ant. Using a process the team called “band-limited double-step Fresnel refraction,” they were able to build the hologram in only 177 seconds, down from an original 350. ” says James Plafke for extremetech.

The camera that can see through skin

A camera that can see through skin and even frosted glass has been revealed.

So far in my posts, I’ve been talking about how art, influences my work, and the progress I’ve been,  to  innovate media, and   create something that  can help the world, especially the  film world. I’ve been doing research to  see what is already  out-there, and how it can influence me in my development. It seems that the world is moving fast, and there are already  a few cameras that are able to use the speed of light, laser, and 3D, but there is nothing like my new camera.

A camera that can see through skin ,  has been revealed,to the world, by an Israel team. It uses natural light rather than lasers, ” The technique uses what is called a spatial light modulator to ‘undo’ the scattering that makes objects opaque or non-reflecting.”  says dailymail.co.uk  , and   Professor Yaron Silberberg of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, who led the research. said ‘If you want to look to see an embryo developing inside an egg but the eggshell scatters everything, or you want to look through the skin, scattering is the main enemy there, and time-of-flight is not a good solution,’

‘You can take a piece of wall and effectively turn it into a mirror, and this is the part that makes everybody raise an eyebrow,’ said Professor Silberberg.

The technique is likely to be first used for medical scanning, said MARK PRIGG .

This is something that  shows that my camera, will in the future be something that people can use, but till then  there are a lot of things that needs development.

This camera was the start for  a new inventions witch is  a camera that peers around corners, witch uses laser pulse and was a inspiration for my work.

Creating a community ?

My  first idea was to create a community of  people that share the same interests in  media, via an app , that will use  RADAR, CHAT, and a  page  where you can share your ideas, and DONATE for the projects you are interested in.

What is a “community” ?, conform to  Oxford dictionary,  a community is, ”  [MASS NOUN] the condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common .”

Why this app will be useful :  

“The Internet likes you, really likes you. It offers you so much, just a mouse click or finger tap away.” says Steve Lohr, International Herald Tribune, in an article for http://www.deccanherald.com/. His article explains how internet and technology is taking over the world. In 2008, IBM declared that it was going to make a big push into the industrial Internet, using computing intelligence to create more efficient systems for utility grids, traffic management, food distribution, water conservation and health care. 

What did I learned from that, is that media and “the world”, changed, and it’s continually changing over years. Smartphones, and it’s apps, are a game changer, as everyday people use their smartphones, exactly, 110 times a DAY (and up to every 6 seconds in the evening) says  dailymail.co.uk 

My  initial idea,  was related to  building a community, where  people will help people, share ideas, get together, and create. While researching it , I found out that  there are many websites that  is helping people donate for their ideas, or just charity, some of them are ” www.kickstarter.com , http://www.ted.com( which is a website  where you care share your ideas) , http://donatemoney2me.com.. etc . This explains that  the DONATE, section in my  App, will  not be the important part of it, and will be in there, as an easier way for the people that will use the app  to get founding for their project.

The most important part of the App, is the community, as I think people  those days, have a problem  communicating with one another, and are afraid to share their ideas, so, the important bit of this App, is making people, feel easy,  when sharing ideas, will also help  students, and amateur  filmmakers, to get started, and get to know people around them, get in touch, communicate,   get involved in other projects.  Even though  my tutor said that there is facebook, twitter, and all those other platforms, I still think that  20% of the people on facebook are using it in a professional way.

The users on Facebook spend 20 minutes per day on the site, whereas the average for any website is roughly 10 seconds.  Linking all this information,  me and  other 100 people from ART & Design, feel that  my App will be  something worth  making, and 11,800,000 people , share the same interests, on ( community, Mass media , Mobile app, social media, filmmaking, etc.

It sounded like a plan till my tutor said that he doesn’t like the idea, in fact non of my  ideas, and I had to put many hours in just sitting , relaxing and think about ideas, searching the internet,  looking at technology and what the future will bring.

It’s been a long process, trying to think of a revolutionary idea that will help the world in a way or another. From Term 1, and  draw things from the past, to  future, This module helped me understand that media is all about creating, and as nothing is original, we need to get our inspiration  from the past in order to create the future. As in real life,  we,( people), need to  rethink our past,  use the present  to change the future.

 

 

Video Pitch Development

 
      Let’s start by knowing my idea which is a new media product, that will use the same principles, as the real-world technology cameram that  can see around corners, but my prototype, is a bit more sci-fi, as I want to create  a camera that is aware of the travel time of light, and  can  analyse the object, and environment, using laser pulse, and  when you watch it back , it will use  3D holography to   create the hologram.
  As for 260MC , we need to create a video pitch  that will show the development and the idea, I’ve decided that I have to research more about  my idea, see  is there is  another prototype out there, is someone though about it before, or just to clear my mind around what exactly I should  know when creating a such bold project, and the process I’m going thru. 
   I’ve asked myself if there is a need for my idea, and in the research below, I think that the world is ready, and in a few years, if not 10 then 50, my idea will be  real and everyone will hold my camera in their hands.
  In order to build an audience for my new idea, I had to do some research, and find out how many people are interested in technology, cameras, media, holography,e.t.c, so I’ve created an ad  using Facebook, witch allow me to  see that 5,400,000 people share the same interests, and they could be my audience for my new idea , just in Uk, and more then 34,000,000 in US, which I think it’s more then I could ever imagine. As a new prototype  I think that my audience will  get engage, fast,  as I think we all want to know what future brings, and  how things will be different. From ÉTIENNE-JULES MAREY, which begins his initial studies into the possibility of analysing the motion of birds in flight in 1870, to ADWEARD JAMES MUYBRIDGE, which used a battery of 24 cameras to photograph a race horse,  and was the beginning of what would become known as stop-action series photography. Muybridge would continue the study of motion and the theory of locomotion using animals, and later, humans.

We can see how the way we see things changed, and now  having a camera that uses laser to  photograph across the corner. Looking up the CNN.com website to  find out more about Ramesh Raskar’s camera, witch is  similar to my idea, I find out that ” The speed of light isn’t infinite: light travels about a foot per billionth of a second ” , the process that he’s been thru with his research, and   I realised that  I need to  do more research into the in ultrafast lasers and photonics, but what I know for sure is that  is possible  to build it into a camera.
