201 MC Reflection

‘Learning through experience is the normal, common place approach to learning, and we take it for granted.’ Miller and Boud (1996)

After my work experience  as a freelancer for Virtual’s new track” Don’t close your heart”, and my documentary for “La Gomera”, I heartedly agree with this statement. During my life I have taken my experiences for granted for example throughout my academic career and vocational encounters I haven’t really reflected on them.Swedish research that was later developed by Marton, Hounsell and Entwistle (1997) suggested that there were two types of learning – deep or surface learning. The first stage was to plan for my experience and for it to be successful I had to plan well because ‘effective planning is at the heart of effective teaching and learning.’ Gower (1997) I had to produce an initial proposal where I put forward potential career area that I could work in. I also did a proper CV,and a SWAT analyse to helped me develop myself as a professional.

A number of studies ( Bennett, Dunne & Carre, 2000; Arnold, Loan-Clarke, Harrington & Hart, 1999) have proved that skills gained at work placements are very important and sought after by employers. Having that in mind I decided to try on every opportunities that I could face, and I started looking for experience in Tv and Film. I’ve even contacted, opportunities that I thought were out of my league (TV 2 in Norway, PRO Tv in Romania, camera op for a short film project by a team in London). Those are  just a few examples, but in the end I got to do, exactly what I wanted for my professional experience, which is creating a music video for an important artist. Back in december I was contacted by Virtual, and I was, and still am, very proud of myself, as I think that being a freelancer and having clients come to you and trust you with their work, is the best feeling in the world.

It was a long process, and I have to thank my team for believing and helping me throughout this project. While I was in Tenerife I also wanted to do an observational documentary about ” La Gomera”, which is 20 minutes away  from Tenerife. I wanted to use all my opportunities and I think it was a smart choice, analysing my opportunities, and try to make the best out of  it. I discovered  and learned so much in this trip. I know that  now I have a clear version of what inspires me and what I want to do in the future.  201MC thought  me, to be professional, work with clients, develop my skills, and also develop my confidence that I needed to move forward. I felt extremely lucky to be able to gain experience, and put in practice the theoretical part from university, and being able to travel, cultivate myself, and have an International Experience, that developed me at work, and I could now use in practice for my  professional  future.

Being a freelancer, has given me an insight in to what I would like to do in the future, showing and giving me the drive and determination to do well. In the same time, I know now that this is what I want to do, work in the music industry, directing  music videos, and in the same time  work for short-films. I don’t think I would be involved in the documentary part of media, but I am sure that I will direct one from every single place I’m going to visit, as I think it’s a good opportunity showing  the world, the beautiful places  that are and my cultural experience.

I have learnt so many things throughout this module, developing skills and knowledge that I will be sure to use in the future.  I feel this module has helped me realise what I want to do in my working life and given me the opportunity to gain experience in areas of the media industry first hand.

Documentary,

I’ve been working a lot this past week  1st of May to 5th to finish  my documentary,as I wanted to create an observational piece that will give the audience the movement sensation, and the feeling that they are a part of this trip. I also wanted to  present  one of the most romantic  storied besides Romeo and Juliet, which is ”  The Legend of Gara and Jonay”. In the same time I wanted to present the beautiful island and it’s culture, and the most interesting thing that I found to be ” The Whistle”, or the local people say “The Silbo Gomero” which is as http://www.agomera.travel’s say  ” a whistling language used from immemorial times on the island of La Gomera to communicate over long distances. It is not a series of preset codes that allows the expression of limited content, but an articulate language, unconventional, where you can exchange an unlimited range of messages, reproducing by whistling the characteristic sounds of a spoken language.”

Back to the legend of Gara and Jonay, which is the main focus of  my documentary, a little speck peak  is that:

” Before the Spanish conquest of the island, the beautiful princess Gara lived on La Gomera. She fell in love with the poor peasant’s son from Tenerife, Jonay. He reciprocated her feelings and sailed on a raft to the neighbouring island every day, to visit his love.

But the relationship seemed to be doomed from the start. A priest predicted great misfortune for both parties. As the couple were about to be wed, the prophecy seemed to come true.”  ( translated from the audio recording of our guide from the trip).

So far I made around 6 drafts, but I’m not happy with  it. so I’m planning of  finishing by   the next 2 days and  publish it on my blog.

After finishing up the  music video project with my team, I went on  Easter Holiday  in Norway to visit my family, where I was, contacted by a Cosmetic Beauty Clinic, to film a tv ad, for their office, and what they do. I was very exited, as  I felt like I can really do this freelance job, and it was a good opportunity to  gain more experience in creating tv ads.  We  arrange a meeting to visit their office, have a first look, and discuss the details. They are really nice people, and they really wanted to work with me, as they think my work is  interesting/outside the box, and I have a unique feel about my work. In the meeting I gave them a small preview of what I want to create and they were really impress with it.

While I was in Norway, We had  3 pre-production meetings, where we clarified all the details, from equipment, to  where will they  be able to have their appointments, and  we decided on a date  witch is  7th of june.  I can’t say more about the idea, and what it’s going  on with the project, and they want to be secret before going into  tv/ and internet, but I can say that it’s going to be a simple idea, presenting the technics  they use, and office, the rest it’s worth waiting.

In my time in Norway I was also working on editing my  documentary for 201MC, and I’m still working on  it, as I want to  present the story  of Tenerife and La Gomera in the best way possible. I’m still working on it, and hope it will be ready  soon.

I’ve taken a little time off witting on here, as  we’ve been doing the same thing everyday for the past 4 days, which is editing the 5 drafts. I can say that my client is extremely happy with the drafts, and he decided to go with the 3rd draft, which is a simple clean, edit, with a bit of experimental at the instrumental part of the song, even though it wasn’t our favourite  draft, we are grateful  that  he felt so in love with what we do, and our work could be seen all around the internet when  it will  be available. We are now going to have the last meeting tomorrow to finalise the final version of the 3rd draft.

This past week was perfect for my team, we got to know each-other, and  even share contact numbers in case someone needs some help, or a job opportunity.  Thought the process we  even managed to learn from each-other  when it comes to editing, or camera-op. It was a learning experience in every  way, culturally,  using equipment, being professional, editing skills, teamwork, how to promote ourselves though social media.

This opportunity was amazing and we had 29 days of  of working with each-other, on this project. I think 201MC, gave me the confidence I needed, in order to go out in the world and do what I love to do.

First day of editing the footage.

As we planned we want to create 5 edit drafts of the video,  we are planning of using the 5 days to have a finished draft by the end of the day, and have the final 2 days to  finish the final  edit, that my client will choose.

In the first day we had  5 hours of continue editing, my team and I worked together, in this process, but I wanted to have one of them edited in the way I want to,( director’s cut),  so I’ve been working on my edit and in the same time, the group first  draft. It’s been a long process, having all our ideas coming together, but at the end of the day we have our first edit, and we are very proud, I sent the draft to my client, and now we are waiting for a response, to have just a thought of what he thinks.

As a team we think that we have enough footage to create 5 different edits, on the music video and play with it. We are thinking that we can create a short film, and have voice over for the first minute, but we have to contact my  client, and see if he agrees with the idea, or he just wants the song to be played in the background.

We are looking forward for tomorrow, and we have enough coffee for this week. This journey is been  more then we expected and we love every single minute of it.

Day 5 and  6

The music video project went amazing, we have been filmed  every single shot we needed + extra shots, to have just in case  we will need them at some point. We’ve managed to use our creativity, and in the end we have  extraordinary  footage  to use for  this project. Everyone is happy with the trip, and they say that they helped them being more creative, and   do their best to use a simple idea in a creative way.

For those last days we kept the same strategy as before,  so we went to Los Cristianos, and Los America, walking around with the cameras, also have so still shots, and   we  have 2 tracking shots.

I think this experience was good for all of us, as we had an opportunity to work with a real client, be professional, and have everything in time.

After  Day 6, we   had an after-production meeting, planning  the editing process, and  thinking about a promoting the  music video, in the best way we can.

We are planning on having  another week for editing Monday to Friday 27th  of  March to  3rd of April , timetable : 9:00 to 14:00 everyday, and edit 5 drafts so our clients could choose the one he likes the most.

Day 4

Today  it was a short day, and we wanted to use it carefully. I decided that  we need a continue shot, from leaving the hotel to  the beach. And I decided that everyone should get a camera. I took the Nikon D5100, and the rest of my team used their phones. we managed to have a continue shot, and we recorded 4 hours of footage.

I wanted to do that as  that what my client wanted to have in his video, to get the feeling of someone walking with a camera and enjoying himself/herself. I think this trick was helpful, and by the end of the day we had amazing footage of movement and we were in cloud 9, as everything   is going perfectly and everyone is acting professional on set.

We finished the day at 15:00, and then we went to visit a production company, get to know people who work there, and it was  a very interesting experience.

I think that choosing this location, and  having everyone so prepared is making me realise that this is what I want to do. From filming to  cultural experience, visiting  amazing places, and getting to  interact with  other people, sharing the same love for media.

201MC, is  helped me develop myself, and I can feel, that I’m on the right track, following my dream.
